Some people believe that only the actions which are mentioned in the Quran and Prophetic tradition as examples are the amal saleh or good deed. Any other good action is not amal saleh.
But this can be proven wrong from the Quran.
In the 103rd Chapter of the Quran, Surah al-Asr, we read the passage:
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ
Except those who have faith, do good, and encourage each other to the truth, and encourage each other to perseverance/patience.
In this single ayah, we can see that encouraging others to truth or advising others to good counsel is indefinite. There are not just one or countable ways to advise others to truth; there are uncountable ways. Similarly being patient is not just one way or just a few ways, there are unlimited ways to be patient and have perseverance. So for the same reason, Amal Saleh is not a countable or specific action, but there are unlimited ways to do good deeds.
In the Quran, we find this pair of commandments to have faith and do righteous deeds.
A good translation that captures this spirit can be: To do good deeds with purpose, to satisfy Allah, to do action to achieve taqwa.
