Crowley and Rosaleen G. Crowley Professor of Theology and Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies and Theology at the University of Notre Dame. His scholarship focuses on World Religions and World Church, History of Christianity, Qur'anic Studies, Origins of Islam, and Muslim-Christian relations.
In this video, he acknowledges the difficulty of ranking translations due to theological and literary perspectives, but still shares his list.
The fifth favorite is Alan Jones' translation which is well-written and distinguishes between the second person singular and plural in Arabic.
The fourth is the Quran with phrase by phrase English translation by Ali Quli Qarai (The Quran: with a Phrase by Phrase English Translation), which Reynolds finds useful for studying Quranic Arabic.
The third is Muhammad Assad's translation, which has some controversies due to rationalizing tendencies.
The second is A. Droge's Quran (A New Annotated Translation), which is a new annotated translation.
The first and Reynolds' top favorite is A.J. Arberry's translation, a classic published in 1955. Reynolds also provides some examples of Assad's controversial translations.
